July Weather

July has shown us how wonderful an English summer can be, with 18 consecutive days with no rain, and temperatures in the high 20's. It also reverted to type and since the 23rd there has been some rain every day. With yesterday's downpour the total of 3.783 inches makes July the wettest month this year. As an interesting comparison, here in Charente-Maritime, France, we've just had one of the hottest, sunniest July's on record. The local paper says we had 11 consecutive days over 30°C.

We have also had a record summer for thunderstorms. Apart from the June hailstorm (hail the size of tennis balls) which left us with broken roofs and car, others burnt out the internet router, cut off electricity (one for over seven hours) and generally soaked what was left of the garden plants. Despite this rain the fruit trees are so stressed there's no fruit left on them.

I'm not sure what"s worse: over-wet, as at Strickley, or over-hot, as here.
